I've run marketing departments before and I have done "scare campaigns" (e.g. This movie is SO scary you'll need to sign a waiver...do not see if you have heart problems, etc.). If these A.I. warnings are a version of "this shit is so powerful it can wipe out humanity" to hype an IPO then it is literally the most idiotic campaign of all time. If the goal is Regulatory Capture to put up roadblocks against Open Source once again it is the most idiotic campaign of all time. And yes, I get that if you take away those motives you are left with the stated motives of the A.I. CEOs, which is unbelievable in its' supposed altruism to even the softest cynic. (i.e. I would rather burn the company than hurt humanity) But here we are because: - If they wanted to regulated their competition to death one could easily argue that while they have strong fiduciary responsibilities to maintain guardrails - Open Source does not and therefore needs to be regulated. Self-serving but it is still a convincing argument. - They also do not need to hype their IPO anymore than it already is - these companies have to literally stop people from signing up to their Pro-levels. Seriously one would have to be a complete moron to cry apocalypse in order to get reg capture or to hype an IPO - and these CEOs are a lot of things, but they are not morons.
