“Steve Jobs was the ultimate cross-disciplinary human being.” Jimmy Iovine, cofounder of Beats and Interscope Records, says he knew within 30 seconds of meeting Steve Jobs that Apple was different. “The minute I met him and Eddy Cue, I said, ‘Okay, this is where the party is.’” This was back in 2003, at the peak of the music industry’s piracy crisis. Iovine had already taken the problem to five other companies. After meeting Jobs, he went back to Universal Music CEO Doug Morris with a simple message: “License this guy, because they know a lot more about this than anybody in our business. And they have feel.” Universal took his advice. Apple launched the iTunes Music Store with all five major labels in 2003 and sold more than 1 million songs in its first week. ▻
