We need a quantum performance benchmark that tracks progress towards real utility. Metrics like qubit count and gate fidelity have been essential for quantum computing, but as the industry moves toward fault-tolerant, application-scale systems, they no longer tell the whole story. That’s why we’re excited that @SandiaLabs has led the development of QUOPS—the Quantum Universal Operations Performance System—with contributions from Quantinuum and @nvidia. QUOPS provides an architecture-agnostic way to measure quantum performance across physical- and logical-qubit systems, and considers the shape and structure of realistic quantum programs. It captures two key quantities for realistic quantum applications: Q — the largest computation that passes a success threshold Ω — the effective operations per second Together, they answer a much more practical question: How much computation can this machine actually deliver—and how quickly? This matters enormously as quantum systems scale toward workloads requiring billions to trillions of operations. It also creates a common language for comparing different architectures, evaluating roadmaps, and informing future procurement decisions. Measuring QUOPS has already begun across multiple vendors’ hardware. Now the broader community is invited to help build the benchmarking ecosystem: vendors to report Q and Ω; buyers to consider QUOPS in RFPs; and researchers to contribute fault-tolerant architectures and resource estimates. The future of quantum computing will be measured not just by how many qubits a machine has, but by the computation it can deliver.
