New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Attorney General Letitia James are suing the Trump administration to block a new immigration rule that would expand when the government can deny green card and visa applications based on an applicant's potential use of public benefits. The expanded "public charge" rule is set to take effect Sept. 18 and would broaden the benefits immigration officials can consider. Mamdani argues the policy creates "uncertainty and fear" among immigrant New Yorkers, while James is leading a separate challenge with 21 states and Washington, D.C. Several major cities and counties across the country are joining New York's lawsuit, including Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Santa Clara County and King County, Mamdani said.
