MLB could be heading for a major overhaul, with fewer regular-season games, longer playoff series, and teams getting to pick their postseason opponents. Under a new proposal, Major League Baseball would shorten the regular season from 162 to 154 games beginning in 2029, giving players a standard day off each week to help with rest and recovery. The Division Series would also expand from best-of-five to best-of-seven, potentially adding eight postseason games. But one of the biggest changes could arrive even sooner. Beginning in 2027, the No. 3 seed would choose whether to face the No. 5 or No. 6 seed in the Wild Card Series. Once that round is complete, the No. 1 seed would get to select which Wild Card winner it wants to face in the Division Series. The proposed changes are part of a broader plan that includes a salary cap and floor system, potentially reshaping both the regular season and the road to the World Series.
